The Legend: Ares was the bold and bloodthirsty son of Zeus and Hera. He was the god of war and glorified in battle. He was brash, handsome, and proud. He was fond of the dry arid land of Thrace, and here was his most sacred temple. He had a brief rather scandalous affair with Aphrodite, goddess of love, who was already married to Hephaestus the blacksmith of the Gods; as she preferred Ares’ strong perfect form to that of her lame and crippled husband.
