The Myth: A sad and poignant tale of unbridled passion seeking unrequited love is retold. Lovely Daphne, a chaste companion of Artemis goddess of the hunt, was the nymph daughter of a river god. She was transformed by her father, Achelous, into a laurel tree (at her pleading to be saved) as she would rather have kept her virginity than submit to the impassioned embrace of Apollo. Toes became roots, flesh became bark, blood became sap and hair became leaves…For centuries these leaves were sacred to Apollo and used to crown victors in contests, athletic events and symbolized the best and the brightest. The Oracle of Delphi would chew them, to put her in a trance, before she sat on her golden tripod above a chasm in the Earth to inhale vapors and foretell the future.
