The Legend: Dionysus, the last born of the twelve Olympians, and the only one mothered by a mortal (Zeus was his dad); he was the god of wine-both the inspiration and freedom it could bring and also the madness resulting from its overindulgence. From his years of travels on earth we have vineyards, the theatre, mystery rites and even wild orgies…where disbelievers and doubters of the god were torn to pieces. Never was there a god with such a dual nature; he was even born twice (the meaning of his name in Greek), as his mother Semele was tricked by a jealous Hera (Zeus’ eternally jealous wife) and burned to death, but because he was immortal-Zeus sewed the developing child to his inner thigh until the time he was born!
The Fragrance: A walk on the wilder side of life. This begins rather intensely, with sharp spicy pepper, bitter greens and woods reminiscent of shadowy forests and elusive places. A warm vapory accord twists through the entire composition, with notes of fruitiness and a warm glow similar to wine. Flowers, some green and fresh and some full and lush, blend to run the gamut between innocence and unchained lust. Night blooming jasmine and heady tuberose balance fruity honeysuckle, crisp narcissus and a blushing rose. Just like the god himself, this scent has a tender side and a wild side resulting in an androgynous balance. Drying earthy, with hints of animal muskiness, with sweet resins and subtle oriental notes that remind us of his journeys to the near and far east. A scent for those who are in touch with their primitive sides, be it maenad or satyr, and realize you cannot know the light until you have been in the shadows.
