The Legend: Helios was the son of the titans Hyperion (the original sun god) and Thea (brilliance). He was brother to the Moon (Selene) and the Dawn (Eos). Crowned with fiery rays, he drove the chariot of the Sun across the vault of the sky; keeping his team of powerful steeds on course and seeing everything. His palace was in the East, and after he set in the west each night he rode a golden boat around the stream of Ocean (that girdled the flat earth) and rose again each morning. Helios had many wives and a son Phaeton, who asked his father to drive the chariot for one day, which ended in disaster. His daughters (Phaeton’s sisters) the Heliades shed such tears at his death that they were changed into poplar trees by the Gods, and they still weep tears of golden amber. Though he was a titan himself he (and his sisters) sided with Zeus and the Olympians in the war for Heaven, and as such were given positions of great importance. Without Helios and his warmth, man would freeze, crops would wither and die and nothing could live. One nymph loved him so that she would not move, and followed his movements each day with her face so that she grew rooted to the spot and became the flower heliotrope which still follows the sun on its daily journey.
